What does 3g mean as opposed to 3G?

I have a blackberry 9800, on orange. about an hour ago my phones given up on me? :? I cant make calls, send texts, use bbm or anythin... even though i have full bars but it says 3g as opposed to 3G.. can anyone help me?

Try a hard reset. With the power on, remove the battery for at least 30 seconds. Then test.

I think it lower case is when you are not on BIS, hard reboot as aiharkness suggested should fix it.
