Just got word from my Cingular BB guys that the 7290 will start shipping with 4.0 installed.

I might have to call BS on this one... it's still in beta. I'm thinking it's 3.8 (which looks surprisingly similar to 4.0). He might have seen pics or a beta of 4.0 and assumed it was the same.

nope, its 3.8 and not only that, they don't plan on supporting blackberry's in any way officially, especially as modems

They do have a semi-knowledgeable support team, however, they are not "officially" supporting the blackberry. This way, they don't have to honor helping OS problems, bluetooth problems, internet access problems, etc.

I think they feel that the new pocket pc phones are going to completely take over the blackberry once the prices come down. I would tend to agree.

That's very possible. I just updated my 7290 w/ 3.8 to the latest software package version from AT&T on the special download page for that provider:

http://www.blackberry.com/support/downloads/aws/

It was very easy to do via the BB Desktop Manager software so I'd hope that upgrading to OS4 when it's released is just as easy. I believe I did have to provide my PIN or IMEI to download it.

You should check w/ Cingular and see if they have a similar software update page.

I didn't realize that my BB 7290 wasn't up to date with that current 3.8 myself. I just updated and everything went just fine, glad you pointed that out vietsb.

FYI update -

I d/l'ed the Hong Kong v4.0 7290 software and it's a 33MB .exe file that installs into the RIM folders on your Windows PC. From there, you use the BB Desktop Manager software to initiate the upgrade. There are a few special steps such as possibly needing to play w/ the vendor.xml file, but I think that's only if you're trying to install non-approved/different carrier versions. Read more on http://www.blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1995.

I decided not to install since the Hong Kong v4.0 had a few Chinese language files in there and I figure AT&T/Cingular and RIM are probably within a few weeks of releasing their official v4.0 package.

You should look fwd to the v4.0 update (hopefully in next few weeks) since even w/ the BB Internet Browser loaded on my 7290, I can view HTTP sites no problem but SSL/HTTPS sites produce an odd error. AT&T Support just notified me of the issue probably being that I'm not on v4.0 yet. I'll post separately about this issue so others might not have to waste their time.

Does your BB still list your OS number as being v3.8.0.145 after upgrading? My OS still does, its not a big problem, just wanted to know if their was anything else I should do or just ignore it.

Good eye! I just noticed that same thing and it's okay to ignore. The base software is still .145, but the package of Applications is the .168 build which includes Password Keeper, some SSL and other core file updates, etc. Oh, I should add "I think" to all of this since I just got my 1st BB ~2wks ago.

np... glad I wasn't the only one. It was good to hear this from someone in the same boat as I am. The password keeper is a pretty handy app, and I like the idea of grouping together some of my contacts (once i figure that new option out) in the address book.

Ditto. Knowing that someone else is suffering the same tech problems as I is somewhat comforting... Now we just sit back and wait for v4.0.

I hope they release it soon. I\'m running HK4.0, but I don\'t want to upgrade all my users to a non Cingular approved OS.
