Actually, on my Berry I am able to speed dial AND use the program shortcuts, both from my home screen. I have the "Dial from Home Screen" option tagged for OFF in order to do this. I just don't pick the same speed dial shortcuts as are already taken by the program shortcuts.
The only thing this takes away from me is being able to dial a new number from my home screen. To do that I just hit the green phone button, then dial away. It's really not an inconvenience at all.
You are correct, the program shortcuts are not configurable, but I haven't come across a reason to do that just yet. I don't see the need for configuring apps that I seldom use with a shortcut. The most commonly used apps for me are my calendar, messages (both email and SMS/MMS), address book, options, browser, etc. In other words, I really don't miss being able to configure new program shortcuts.

I haven't even found a good site to visit to get this information, much less an app.

This would be awesome. maybe you chould choose the sports too?

Save Unknown Number Application
I don't know if there is already a program that does this, and if there is someone please let me know where I can download it...
On my old Treo 650, everytime I received a call from an unknown number, when I hung up it would prompt me to save the unknown number as a new contact.
I would love to have this feature on my curve so I don't forget to save people's numbers!

I have speed dials set up on shortcut keys. For the short cuts, you click the key normally, for speed dials you hold the key for a few seconds.

I would like to see all day events stay at the top of the screen when the calendar page is scrolled down.

I keep my phone in my pocket so I don't see the flashing LED light when I miss a call, get a text message, or miss an appointment (sometimes I'm in a loud environment so I don't notice the ring and vibrate every time).
My last phone would keep ringing and vibrating every 5 or 10 minutes to remind me that I'm missing something.
I would like to have this option with my BB (I've looked around for this but haven't found something that will do it).

Wow, thanks a lot, exactly what I need.
I guess this can be taken off of the "unwritten" list to the "not found by me" list.

A one button app to take an unlocked blackberry with no password enabled, to a password enabled locked blackberry. I usually leave my phone unlocked when its with me, but if I am goin to be leaving it laying around my house, around people I may not trust I'd like to be able to just hit a button and have it password lock, without turning on the autolock feature, etc. etc.

an updated irc application - jmirc is okay for what it is, but the whole switching to the blank screen to reply in a channel has drawbacks, and the developer stopped updating it a loooong time ago.
a good free flashlight utility so i can just hit a hotkey when i need some extra light, and the HIDs on the curve will turn on and provide it..that damn flash is bright!

An application that will allow me to password protect specified folders/files on my media card. I use my BlackBerry as a "thumb drive" for many work related projects... and it would be nice to have the option of securing just those projects. I honestly do not want to jump through hoops of entering a password to access pictures, videos and music, so the ability to be selective would be optimum.
And before anyone suggests password protecting my entire blackberry... please note that this has been done since day one. I'm looking for that extra level of security.

Unwritten apps
1) A good timer app that lets you pre-program a list of different countdown and timer intervals. Then the ability to either restart that countdown or start a timer. My Timex DataLink watch has this. I would think it would be a breeze on the BB.
2) An app that will track signal strength and match it to GPS coordinates. You should be able to set the sample interval so you can make a "map" of signal strength and where it was.

program I want the most
Anybody remember x-com ufo defense??? I'd LOVE to have a version compatible with my 8830... It was a great turn based game that would be fun to play on the blackberry's keyboard. I tried games like contra4 and it is just too hard to maneuver with the controls set the way they are, and Destroy All Humans 2 just isn't as well designed, IMO.

Bedside Mode Sheduler.
I like the "When Charging Do:" option in the clock app (4.6), but I charge throughout the day and while in the car. What I am looking for is identical functionality to Auto On/Off, but use bedside mode instead.

Morse Code Generator
Being an amateur radio operator, I would like to see a Morse Code Generator, with the following features:
Utilizing a user chosen key on the Blackberry, a Morse Code Generator that will use a user generated tone, (say in the range of 400 - 1200 Hz, ideally centered on 800 Hz), which in turn can translate the characters generated onto the screen, say into ASCII format, such as seen in this message. Possibly it could be saved to a file and then forwarded as a text message, or, then again, maybe in Morse Code, (ie, International Morse Code).
I currently own a Blackberry Pearl (8100), so that would probably be a good start of phone of choice....., heh heh........
For certain, it would be a hit with the amateur radio community, especially the folks that have a Blackberry, and are familiar with the code itself.
I dont know how feasible this would be, but think that it could be done.
I would volunteer to be your first beta tester, and also, one other thing. If the speed of the characters could be say within 8 - 30 words per minute, (once again, something that could be user chosen, via a menu).
A word in Morse Code is considered 5 characters in length, and spaces I believe are considered 2 characters in length, (just a rough idea).
I could provide the documentation on the protocol if needed.
Looking forward to your reply.

This is kind of an interesting way to do it, but you can make the camera silent.
1. Dial into your voicemail.
2. Turn the volume down to nothing.
3. Activate the camera and take your picture.
4. No sound! :D
I can't do anything about number 3 for you.
