Can these cards be formatted? If so, why not split the 2 GB card into two separate 1 GB partitions?

It would be nice to use a 2GB MicroSD card in the 8100 but hey if it's at 1GB only then it's at 1GB. I'm just thrilled that I can snap a pic, listen to some tunes and watch some video all on my CrackBerry.

I think the point that EVERYBODY is missing is the error posted "SDCard block length is unsupported."

We've already seen this with the current 3RD Edition S60 smartphones (E-series & N series) but not affecting the UIQ based devices like the SE P990i - memory card - the upcoming W950i (4GB HDD). However the ONLY exception to the S60 devices is the N91 which also has an internal 4GB HDD. ALL these models are based on the CORE Symbian 9.1a > system. So why are some systems affected and others aren't? Is it the memory card format? Is it the internal HDD? Is it the card interface? NON of the above! That I can be assured of!

> The problem is the file system that the memory card is FORMATED with. " block length is unsupported" not sure if THAT particular MicroSD was formated using FAT32 -OR- FAT16?! I think we should TEST having the Pearl FORMAT the memory card COMPLETELY first before trying to write to it -OR- use the PC with a card reader/writer formated to do the job.

It's just amazing to me that with all the "power users" on this site no one has tried a real 2 gig card with a real pearl yet.

Get me a Pearl and a 2 gig card, I would be more than happy to try it out for you, and let you know.

If I had a 2GB card I'd try but I only have a 1GB card. I was waiting for the 2GB card to drop in price before I buy and I'm glad for that since it may not work in my 8100 anyways.

There's a chance the 2 GB card will work but that the 8100 will only see the first 1 GB. Anything beyond 1 GB of data will simply not be found by the device.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry.

With regards to the micro SD card that can be put into the BlackBerry Pearl, there is no restriction on the storage size as it would depend on the size of the micro SD card.

Regards,

Angry 2GB Thread - No Work!

OK - I've tried it and can report that it doesn't work. I got my 8100 and a 2gb card today and was so excited to be able to use it especially after the blackberry pearl web site indicated that there is no limit except for the size of the card.

The bberry unit will not turn on wth the card in. The screen and LED just flash every few seconds.

Oh well....off to invest in 1gb card tomorrow.

Ditto that - Just got the new SanDisk 2G MicroSD card today. Popped it in and received the same flashing red LED and no workie! Thanks for playing. Validated that the SD is already formatted. However, I'm going to try re-formatting but I'm skeptical that it will work.

Good times good times. Run out of test cycles? Have the consumer do it! One of the main reasons I got this beauty was for the 2GB storage space. RIM needs to get on it!

absolutely any size micro sd card will be compatible reguardless of storage capacity, remember the phone only reads the info on the card and allows you to access pics, music etc,so other thann that the card has nothing to do with the phone. also i was told there were 3 and fgb cards available allthough i havent seen anything larger than a 2 gb currently. then again that is what ive been told ,however i see other posts here that say otherwise?

Wrong!

8100 can only read up to 1GB MicroSD.

Actually you are wrong. I appreciate your response and everyone elses but the peanut gallery is correct. It will NOT work with a card larger than 1GB right now. This has been confirmed by RIM and by a simple test of putting a 2GB card in the device. Until RIM offers a fix I am stuck using a 1GB card but I can't wait til I can use the 2GB one!!

Default Has anyone tried to partition a 2GB Micro SD?

Has anyone tried to format a 2GB card with a 1GB FAT16 partition and see if it will work on the 8100? The partition manager software I have will not work on flash drives, Windows XP disk manager would see/reformat the partition but refuse to resize, so before I invest in new partitioning software I'd like to know if anyone has succeeded in making their 2GB card work that way.

Thanks!

Folks have tried every format known to man, and possibly a few that are not. Partitioning didn't work either. Until there is a firmware update from RIM that specifically addresses this issue it's not gonna work.

That's true. The closest anyone got to get the 2GB to work on the 8100 is to partition it and only use 1GB of it.

That's pointless in my opinion unless you have a 2GB laying around you are not using.

No thats NOT true. NOTHING MAKES THE 2GB card work on the 8100, trust me I have tried everything. Partitioning the card DOES NOT allow it to work. It still fails to boot.

I thought I saw a post about that. Maybe I was wrong.

The only person to post failure of proof of concept re: partitioning was me....it does NOT work. If someone else is able to get the 2GB card to work, at any partition, please do post your solution. I have tried many different combinations of partition size and file system formats, nothing works.
