So far everything works great. I followed Spamdumpster's instructions (before the upgrade) on removing the preloaded media which freed up a lot of space. (No Ghost Files either)
Total memory free 39 MB

What ever this OS has, it sure is freeing up memory. I now have 29MB while before (cleaned up and all) it maxed at around 24MB

First leave teh BB away from the PC (disconected). Run the firmware install process, then go to the locations and do the chamges for teh ALX and the vendor. Once done, conenct your BB, start DM and it will run itself for the new OS.

I recommend doing the upgrade first. Then once the update is done with no problems go back and replace the blackberry.alx file for themes. DM/Application Loader will pick up the changes. There have been issues when using the edited .alx file during the upgrade. I don't have any idea why it would be a problem but some people have run into problems.

It will do nothing to the "Telstra-ness" of your phone. You will get all the latest bug fixes, whatever they may be. It will not change it to a cingular phone. All the software is produced by RIM and is interchangeable on all 8100's. The only trick to loading another carrier's OS is deleting the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader.

Yes, download the latest OS package from the link. Then install it to your PC. Then delete the vendor.xml. Then connect the BB and Open DM and run Application Loader. It will prompt you to upgrade.

Pure curiosity -- you know how when the Pearl (and really any branded T-Mo phone) first boots, there's an initial splash screen saying -T--Mobile- (and on some phones a the Jingle plays). When you upgrade to this OS using the vendor.xml trick and it boots up -- what's the splash screen say/have/show?

It will forever and always say whatever it did when it was new. You can't change that.

I don't know that the glitch is fixed or not... I just upgraded, tethered via BT, and tested my speeds at 118kbps/23kbps. Its not stellar, but its as good as I got tethering my Motorolas, so I'm happy. Tmobile service, BTW, and the Chicago test server.
