I installed .83

DM wouldn't acknowledge the version, said I was running .75 and could only choose to Downgrade to .65.

I renamed the vendor.xml file, then DM would show .83 was available, but wouldn't do the upgrade.

I ended up using Loader in the common folder to do the upgrade and that worked like a charm. Very early remark... it could just be me, but the phone seems a little peppier (though it also wiped out it's logs and cache so that could be why too).

For those of you that have upgraded already, I'd be interested in hearing about any problems and improvements... i've been running .76 since the first time bell put it up and would like to upgrade to .83 if there are noticeable improvements... thanks!

So far, so good.

Upgrade was flawless (from Bell ver .76)
Deleted the vendor.xml file and when I plugged the BB the DM recognized the updated OS and installed it w/o issues.

Had to do an initial Batt. pull, and re-run Enterprise Activation (I'm on BES).

This is what I've seen so far:
  • Much faster response on all aspects.
  • Speed Dial DTMF tones are back - Yeah
  • Call log icon displays new/missed calls (Red Jellybean/White Star thingie) - Neat
  • Third party apps I've used so far w/o issues are: WSJ, vlingo, Weatherbug
  • Internet Browser seems snappier (suggestive, so it may be placebo effect, but it does seem very fast)
  • Changing from portrait to landscape seems the same compared to .76 (which was way faster than .65 to begin with)

I need to test some more, but I am very, very happy I've upgraded.

Thanks,
Paul

Unless another one is floating around, it's a pre-release OEM OS, as always. It may have Verizon files in there, just as with T-Mobile's myFaves, but the device is Verizon branded not the OS.

I upgraded from .75, and the biggest improvement I've seen so far is the portrait to landscape and back... Much faster. Also, Viigo no longer has the "scrolling" issue. So far so good.

Agreed. The portrait to landscape is much faster with .83. and Viigo works so much better now too. No more lag when navigating in and out off the feeds.

My only complaint and this might be a setting I haven't found yet is that when I push the lock button on the top of the storm it locks the screen now and I have to push that button again before I can unlock it with my password. Before I was able to push the top lock button and then press the screen when I wanted to unlock the phone and just enter my password.

RIM sure fixed changing from portrait to landscape when putting Storm on the desk. Now it stays in whatever mode you had it, and doesn't switch to landscape all the time. That was my biggest pain.

I tried turning it off, and the "powering down, press any key to escape" message appeared, but it never powered down. Another battery pull reboot and I am back up good--for now.
I've gone through both of these issues 3 times today. The screen wouldn't turn off so I'd pull the battery only to run into media card issue. I haven't had any more problems since the last go around. Well, I haven't looked at the phone either.

Has anyone had any problems with rebooting on this version? I have had it running for 24 hours now (9530), and it has not rebooted yet. Which is saying something, it was rebooting at least once per day sometimes more.

Also the "memory leak", or whatever it is, seems not to be fixed.

Camera is faster, and doesn't black out when taking a picture. But still is less than fully functional.

I am having fewer bluetooth problems, but otherwise the phone app still leaves a lot to be desired.

How do you do a soft reboot on the storm? I didn't think this was possible.
