Hi,
I recently got a BB 8800. Naturally I want to use the built in GPS capabilities, so I have been going through all the options out there both free and commercial. The last one I thought I should give a whirl was InfoSpace Find It! I haven't seen much hype around it so I thought it would be something I would dismiss after some initial testing. Not so! The interface is very simple and fast. It does a few things, but does it to perfection! It has voice directions. It remembers locations. It has super-fast mapping and finds local services very fast. You can even dial your search results directly from the interface. This is one of those apps that you just start using without looking back. Late last week it took me through Chicago traffic to a meeting I thought I would be late for. Yesterday it took me from Oakland back to SFO without problems and picked a nice Chinese restaurant close to my route in the outskirts of San Francisco.
I have tried Yahoo! Go which is OK but slow and bloated. I hate the fact that you can't get rid of the stuff you do not need in that application. You have to have a Flickr widgets taking up space simply because Yahoo! owns the service. And it comes with Yahoo! Mail when the Blackberry BIS has phenomenal native support for this web mail service. I wish Yahoo! could have a mapping application like Google but they don't.
Google map is the one I have been using most in the past, but for some reason I have problems with it on my 8800. However, The InfoSpace application blows the socks off Google Maps anyway in my opinion.
The few things I wish Find It! had are:
- Location bookmarks (It remembers locations, so it's not a biggie)
- Traffic information
- The option to edit the location based categories.
With the three things above included it would be one of those very few applications I would call perfect.
It's nice when surprises like that happens. It's not very often!
