Default Upgrading Domino Prior to Upgrading BES

Please Login to Remove!

I believe that this question may have been answered in another post I saw. However, I will ask to be more certain. I'm running BES 2.2.4 on Domino 6.0.1 and intend to end up at BES 4.1 on Domino 6.5.5 (on the same piece of hardware.)

Normally, when upgrading Domino, I uninstall the obsolete Domino version, preserving the notes.ini file and the data folder(s). Then install the new Domino version, copy the preserved notes.ini file into the program folder and start up the server -- normally works without a hitch. Any reason to do it differently in this scenario?

Presumably, if I do this I can bring the server back up with Domino 6.5.5 and BES 2.2.4 functional. Then I can down the Domino server and do an in-place upgrade of BES to 4.1 and get on with business. Right?

Thanks,

John Rowland

John, you should be able to do that. However, when I upgrade Domino I usually just run the full setup program without removing the old version. All of the template files should be upgraded and your current data (like notes.ini) should still be fine. I've never had issues doing it this way.

I would agree with topher145...however as a precaution, I would make a copy of the notes.ini file and the data directory somewhere. If you have to go back for whatever reason, simply re-install the previous version of Domino and replace the installed versions of the notes.ini and data directory with the copied files.
Similarly, with BES upgrade (there isn't a downgrade path) copy the BES\State directory and the profiles database (there are some others) before you proceed. There are significant changes made to the domino files which become integrated with the SQL database.

Thanks for the input, folks.
