Default S/MIME support

A quick and probably naive question. After installing OS 4.5.0.37, I now find that I have "Blackberry S/MIME Support" listed among my applications, and "Certificate Search" as a home screen icon. I've never seen these before (I think) and have no idea what they do, or whether I need them. Can someone explain?

It's used for sending encrypted email if you are on a BES. I had to uninstall the beta off of my phone because the version of S/MIME included in the beta wouldn't work properly with my work encrypted email.

According to "BlackBerry Connection Newsletter" from RIM yesterday, it will stay around in the released build of the v4.5 device software:

S/MIME Support Package for Your BlackBerry Enterprise Solution

Bolster the security and privacy of your wireless data with the S/MIME Support Package for the BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution. Included in the upcoming release of BlackBerry® Device Software 4.5 and available at no charge for earlier versions of BlackBerry Device Software as of June 2, 2008.

Ok. I was thinking it had to do with encryption.

It looks like the S/MIME package works correctly in the full version released by Vodaphone
