What's the difference between 2D and 3D ... why wouldn't I just leave it on 3D all the time?

2G is SLOW. 3G is a bit faster.

You can leave it in 3G all the time, the device will revert to 2G (EDGE) if 3G isn't available.

However, if you are in a signal fringe area and the device is constantly searching for a 3G signal, then your battery will run down faster.
