I am very dissapointed with RIM and their lack of labeling on their server software. I was handed the task of BB server admin two years ago when I hired on here and I didn't even know what a blackberry was. I have been operating under the assumption that we have full enterprise edition. I was enlightened today when I tried to add the new CALS that RIM sold us. I had to wait on hold for about an hour to be told that I did indeed have Small business edition. It says that nowhere on the server, in bb manager, in any of the documentation, or in any of our t-support contracts. The part that really burns me is that RIM sold us lisences that we can't use. Shame on them and on top of that, their wait times for talking to a tech have been extremely long since last spring. I am definitely thinking twice about continuing my t-support.

If you provided RIM your SRP they could have told exactly what type of BES you had.

That would be a good idea if I knew I was supposed to ask that question. Most software declares what it is within the software or readme. Such as windows. It says SBS or Enterprise or standard within the software. I have no previous expirience with BB. I walked into this position not even knowing what a BB was.

Update: I hate RIM even more now. They sold us two CALS in december and I never tried to add them because I didn't need them right then. It was when I finally did try to add them last week that I discoved my SBS problem. I called RIM to see if I could exchange them for Enterprise keys now that the server is unlocked and I was informed that it has been past 30 days. They refuse to do anything about it. Too bad for us tax payers, they stole $200 from the US government and they laughing all the way to the bank.

It is an admin's responsibility to know what he is running, and understand the licensing of the products.

I managed to get them to see my point of view. I just got my two keys upgraded to Enterprise and I maintain that their software should indicate what type it is. Just like M$ does, just like Linux does. There is no reason that it shouldn't. I find this practice to be misleading and if I were perfect and had all the time in the world to think of questions to ask, I would own the problem, but I am not and I don't and something as basic as labeling their software should be expected and is, in my opinion, good business practice.

Either way, I now know what I am running, I have everything I paid for and I learned a valuble lesson. Persistance and a fair amount weight in the local IT community pays off. ;)
